May 25, 2023

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Banja Luka, in cooperation with the Committee for International Exchange of Medical Students of the Republic of Srpska - SaMSIC, organizes a roundtable titled "Tobacco-Free Society: Taxation Policies and Public Health". The event, which will take place on May 31, 2023, in Banja Luka in the Senate Hall of the University of Banja Luka, starting at 11 o'clock, is organized as part of the international research project "Accelerating progress in tobacco and tobacco products taxation in low and middle-income countries" implemented by the University of Banja Luka (UNIBL).

The research team of the University of Banja Luka has been working on research related to the economics of tobacco taxation, smoking prevalence, and in 2022, the team worked on researching the economic costs of smoking in BiH and modeling excise taxes on tobacco products and their effects both on revenues from taxation of tobacco and tobacco products and on public health. In 2023, the research focus of the team is on the role of tobacco taxation policies in initiating and prevalence of smoking among young people (based on conducted GYTS studies).

In addition to the research results of the mentioned project, there will also be presentations on the medical aspects of smoking from the perspective of public health, the latest in tobacco control, and efforts towards more effective tobacco control policies. This will be followed by a moderated discussion during which we want to discuss with all interested parties the importance of different segments of tobacco control policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, or how to achieve a tobacco-free society through the synchronization of public health and tobacco taxation policies.

We invite all interested to attend the event with mandatory confirmation of participation by no later than Monday, May 30, 2023, via e-mail: andjela.pepic@unibl.org or by phone: 065/824-782.
